These are innovative projects on rehabilitation gloves, Assamica anxiety-relieving tea and software that supports breast cancer diagnosis.
The competition is part of the project Building University-Industry Learning Development through Innovation and Technology (BUILD-IT) funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), implemented by Arizona State University and Dow Vietnam's STEM Program, which jointly supports innovation for students and learning through projects at universities in Arizona in Vietnam.
Accordingly, after 5 months of implementation with the participation of 27 teams and more than 150 STEM students from 6 technical universities, the Engineering Project in Community Service Competition (EPICS, under the USAID BUILD-IT Project & STEM Program of Dow Vietnam) has just ended.

The first prize belongs to the Rehabilitation Glove Project of DUT Team1 - ANNAM team from Da Nang University of Technology;
Assamica Anti-Relieving Tea Project of HCMUT Team 3 - MED TECH from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology won the second prize;
The breast cancer diagnosis software project of IUH Team2 - iDr team from Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City won the third prize.
27 teams of students from 6 technical universities who are partners of BUILD-IT project showcased their innovation prototype products and presented their projects to judges from the government, business and academic sectors at the USAID BUILD-IT Engineering Project & STEM Program competition of Dow Vietnam Nam, in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh University of Technology and Education.
This is a core program within the framework of the BUILD-IT Project's mission to integrate project-based learning methods into the university's curriculum, demonstrating the unwavering commitment of government, business and academia to bring project-based learning methods into the curriculum at pioneering universities.

Rehabilitation Gloves
Speaking about the rehabilitation glove project that won the first prize of the competition, DUT team 1 - ANNAM from Da Nang University of Science and Technology said that every year, about 200,000 strokes occur in Vietnam (according. vn).
After a stroke, patients often become paralyzed, especially hand paralysis, making it very difficult for them to perform simple daily operations. They must perform recovery exercises to improve the mobility of the hand muscles. Patients often go to the clinic or hospital to be supported by physiotherapists.
However, the long-term treatment at the above facilities costs a lot of money, the facilities are also often overloaded with patients leading to the low quality exercises. The support devices on the market are also very simple, mainly soft balls. In addition, the covid 19 epidemic is complicated, making it difficult to travel for treatment.
"Therefore, we decided to make a rehabilitation glove that made it possible for stroke patients to train on their own at home. This is a partial support solution for patients, helping them to exercise on their own on a regular, continuous basis. This saves time and cost of treatment... " - a team member shared.

This is the 6th time EPICS program has been held in Vietnam and also the fifth time the cooperation is organized with Dow Vietnam's STEM Program. To date, Dow Vietnam has funded more than USD182,000 and provided more than 900 opportunities for students to improve their confidence and capacity to implement innovative projects to serve the needs of society. Dow Vietnam funds student projects, supports faculty, and directs corporate mentoring to motivate students to address pressing challenges facing Vietnam such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
